How many bands can say they came together thanks to a Craigslist ad for an impromptu jam session above a Manhattan noodle shop? In addition to a deliciously salty name, The Hot Sardines’ swingin’ ensemble—dubbed “one of the best jazz bands in New York today” by Forbes—features a horn section, stand-up bass, tap dancer and the vocal stylings of frontwoman Elizabeth Bougerol. Having proven its mastery of New Orleans-style jazz by updating songbook classics like the Andrews Sisters’ “Bei Mir Bist du Schön” and Sinatra’s “I Love Paris,” the group will perform a holiday show at the Mondavi Center. Its signature flair should spark some life into Yuletide classics like “White Christmas” and “Santa Claus Got Stuck in My Chimney.”
