Sep 11, 2016 to Sep 18, 2016
This September, for the first time ever, the 40th annual World Gold Panning Championships will be held in Placerville. The contest—which took place in Spain in 2015 and has also traveled to Poland, Slovakia and Italy—last came to this region in 1998, when it was held in Coloma. The eight-day event starts on Sept. 11 and will welcome 600 modern-day miners from 20 countries, including Austria, New Zealand and South Africa. The prospecting party will also include the “Oh Say Can You See” competition, where one half of a two-person team vocally guides their blindfolded teammate through panning, as well as contests for kids and beginners. Throughout the week, spectators can gold panning for themselves, watch “snake oil” medicine shows, listen to tunes of a bygone era from the three-piece band Gold Mountain, or take a selfie with Gold Rush legends like Wyatt Earp, John Sutter and notorious horse thief Belle Starr (aka the female Jesse James).
|Cost||Free; $10-$30 to compete|
