Up to now, Sacramentans craving a full menu of Korean food have had to drive way out Folsom Boulevard. No longer! The opening of Aura Korean & Japanese Restaurant, tucked away in Mansion Flats, brings succulent bulgogi (grilled marinated beef) and bubbling-hot soondoboo jigae (spicy tofu soup) to the grid. Other highlights include classic bibimbap rice bowls, crisp seafood pancakes and crunchy-sticky chunks of aptly named yang yum, fried chicken smothered in spicy sauce. (Aura’s Japanese and fusion fare includes bento boxes, tonkatsu, Korean BBQ tacos and addictive “crazy fries,” topped with garlicky purple and green sauces, bits of bulgogi, and cheese.) The fried chicken also comes as a family platter, so bring a crew—especially if it’s somebody’s b-day, since this friendly restaurant boasts a birthday wheel with prizes, not to mention a lollipop jar to grab a candy as you depart. After that garlic sauce on the crazy fries, you’ll be glad you did.
