In the spirit of inclusion, this Ice Blocks spot by Michael Hargis (LowBrau, Block Butcher Bar) welcomes eaters of all stripes into a pretty tableau of herringbone floors, terra-cotta planters and blush-hued banquettes, to dine on executive chef and co-owner Brock Macdonald’s upscale live-fire fare. Carnivores, who have been reaping the flavor benefits of smoke and char since caveman times, can satisfy their meaty appetites with Flintstone-size grilled rib eye steaks (too bad for Fred that he wasn’t privy to Macdonald’s herbaceous chimichurri!), while vegetarians can expect to experience the pleasing richness usually reserved for more omnivorous palates: Cheese, in various nondairy forms, enlivens the vegan options—for example, a spicy “nacho” cheese, the guilty pleasure of the bean-and-grain Bounty Burger, is made of wood-roasted cauliflower cores. Smoke also anoints the buzzy bar program, a proven gathering force for the city’s cool kids, who can be found savoring the likes of the Tobacco Road—an Old Fashioned-style libation made with tobacco bitters and poured into glass that had been pressed against a smoldering oak plank—while leisurely playing on the outdoor bocce ball court at sunset.
