Virtuous vegans and carnal carnivores alike are going bonkers for Burger Patch’s planet-conscious, plant-based take on fast-food faves. The eatery has been mobbed since husband-wife owners Phil and Danea Horn opened up shop in May, with patrons queueing up to order a completely vegan burger with a beef-like Beyond Meat patty, cheddar “cheese,” tomato, grilled onions and house-made Patch Sauce served up on a vegan bun from Truckee Sourdough Company, or a Gardein chick’n sandwich, with tangy ranch dressing and a smoked seitan strip pulling the bacon—or rather, facon—duty. (Be prepared to get your meal to go; the diminutive 750-square-foot storefront has very limited seating, specifically an indoor counter with seven stools and three outdoor picnic tables.) Round out the meal with addictive herb-tossed fries (be sure to get extra sides of sauce for dipping) and don’t skip the Earth Quake Shake, which comes in vanilla and/or chocolate—or check the midtown restaurant’s Instagram page to get the inside scoop on the latest bit of off-menu decadence to try, like Patch Style fries topped with melted cheddar, Patch Sauce and grilled onions. There’s no better place to eat like a saint but still taste the sin.
