Essential Information

What’s the most primal social experience known to humankind? Why, sitting around a campfire with one’s tribe, eating a delicious flame-kissed meal. You can partake in this ancient ritual while experiencing the thrill of cutting-edge architecture at the recently opened Drake’s in West Sacramento. A cluster of stand-alone eateries in and around the Barn—the swooping wooden pavilion designed by Dutch landscape architect Jerry van Eyck with ample fair-weather seating under its arch and around roar-ing firepits—this latest outpost of the Bay Area-based brewing company includes the full-service PizzaSmith, where pies and small plates are prepared in wood-burning ovens. The menu rotates seasonally, but recent standouts include a dish of roasted sunchokes in velvety pistou that paired nicely with a hoppy Drake’s Denogginizer, and the Eustace, a vegan pizza topped with butternut squash, onions and almonds. The pizzeria’s sister establishment, Yo?Lobreakfast Food Truck, offers up barbecue, while an outdoor taproom pours suds for the 400-seat beer garden. And come summer, look for a new cocktail lounge and more mobile kitchens to arrive at the Barn. Meanwhile, with spring finally here, it’s the perfect time to cozy up by the fire, channel your inner caveman (or cavewoman) and rekindle old flames.
