This venture from the group behind the acclaimed neighboring restaurant Mother repurposes 7,600 square feet beneath the Crest Theatre as a singular destination for meat lovers, beer geeks, oenophiles, cocktail mavens and every type in between. Chef-owner Michael Thiemann’s sprawling, self-described “American carvery” offers dishes ranging from comforting rotisserie favorites like a French dip kissed with horseradish on a house-made torpedo roll, or organic chicken, roasted to a golden crispiness and accompanied by chimichurri sauce and potatoes, to fried chicken and short rib stroganoff. Vegetarians will love the mac and cheese and seasonal salads. You’ll want to linger in the chic surroundings, from the barrel-vaulted brick ceilings to the bustling open kitchen behind a gleaming bar where imbibers can order craft tipples by new bar manager Jessica White, formerly of Red Rabbit (a recent example: The gin-based Queen Bee, with honey, mint, lemon verbena and cider). No matter your pleasure, this Empress rules.
