Spare, black-and-white eco-chic décor sets the stage for the perfect thin-crust pies turned out by pizzaiolo Fabrizio Cercatore (yep, he’s from Italy—and so is Hot Italian’s wood-fired, hand-tiled oven). And they do mean hot: The oven fires at 700 degrees, toasty enough to bake the blistered crust to perfection in as little as two minutes. Toppings—from simple mozzarella and tomato to innovative concoctions like the Fiori pizza with prosciutto, mushrooms, arugula and Bariani truffle oil—are applied with a delicate hand, in the Italian tradition. But the pizza isn’t the only draw: There’s excellent organic gelato (from its sister pizzeria, Passione in Berkeley), strong espresso and a well-priced wine list, plus sparkling prosecco fruit cocktails—at weekend brunch especially, the perfect cool contrast to the hot pizzas.
