The motto says, “Best-kept secret in Carmichael,” and it might be right. With all-American, slightly spruced-up diner breakfasts (served until 3 p.m.), warm service and busy down-home décor, this cafe—despite its location on a dreary stretch of Fair Oaks Boulevard—hits a sweet spot between greasy spoon and chichi brunch. Go for omelets like a classic three-egg Denver or the “Lido’s Duet,” a two-egg winner with onions, mushrooms, cheese, ham and excellent salsa; fluffy pancakes (Mickey Mouse-shaped for the kids); or, above all, the huge, gooey cinnamon rolls. Lunch and dinner include grilled and deli sandwiches and hot dogs, but we like the morning wakeup, which features strong coffee from Carmichael roaster Boulevard. Confidential to early birds: sleep in. The cafe opens at 7, but the cinnamon rolls won’t be ready until about 9:00.
