This latest addition to the Wong family’s restaurant repertoire—brothers Mason, Alan and Curtis also own Iron Horse Tavern, Cafeteria 15L, Mix Downtown and Firestone Public House—takes diners on an international culinary tour with 16 different tacos by executive chef Christian Palmos, like the Korean fried chicken with kimchi on a steamed bao shell and French-style duck confit in a citrusy tamarind glaze on a corn tortilla. Other items, including the habañero fire ball appetizer (spicy deep fried nuggets of roasted jalapeños, bacon and cream and pepper jack cheeses) and bright, tangy key lime tart dessert, also let you span the globe. And the drinks are equally as diverse, from the Cali craft beers to the quaffable cocktails (the horchata colada is cool and frothy, and the pineapple ginger mojito is balanced and refreshing) and flights of tequila. With apologies to Mies van der Rohe, who popularized the phrase “less is more,” at this buzzing R Street hot spot, mas is mas.
