After their success with La Venadita (see above), the Schnetz brothers decided to launch a nearby biergarten and carvery with chef/co-owner Matt Ridgeway that would take them back to their childhood, when a plate of turkey, stuffing and pickles from Sam’s Hof Brau was their favorite repast. The modern Oakhaus, which opened in May 2017, has whimsical décor (a mint-green wall festooned with cuckoo clocks) and a hearty menu that includes main dishes like schnitzel, meatloaf or the pastrami sandwich with house-made rye bread, and appetizers like delicate kraut balls fragrant with cumin and served with house-made curry ketchup, or a giant pretzel with obatzda cheese (a Bavarian delicacy) meant to be washed down with a stein of German lager or hefeweizen. Save room for a German chocolate cupcake if you can, and park yourself on the dog-and-stroller-friendly patio to experience the parade of street life that is Oak Park’s Broadway Triangle district.
