Skool on K
2319 K St.

In a corner of midtown known more for pub crawling than fine dining, Skool on K’s Japanese-inflected, seafood-centric cuisine from chef Moto Nagano, previously of San Francisco’s Blowfish Sushi and Bushi-Tei, is making a big splash. The dining room has a light, bright, beachy-industrial look, with whimsical details like menus printed on ruled notebook paper (just like in school–get it?) and a large surfboard-like diagram of yellowtail tuna on the ceiling. Standout dishes include the squid-ink spaghettina (an intoxicating bowl of pasta in a lemongrass and red curry dashi broth, dotted with squid, shrimp and enoki mushrooms), grilled whole squid in seaweed butter sauce, and the signature uni flan. Creative desserts include a Point Reyes blue cheese cake topped with honeycomb and a poached pear.
