We’d like to think that the spirit of the late Tower Records founder, Russ Solomon, is watching over the downtown Jewish deli that not only bears his name, but is also appropriately located inside a former Tower Records store. The restaurant is single-handedly reviving Sacramento’s long history of bagel-popping, pastrami-piling, matzo-ball-soup-simmering joints, but with a “newish Jewish” twist. House-smoked lox can be served on a lava salt bagel, for instance, and for every order of traditional whitefish (thick flakes of applewood-smoked sable gently tossed with mayonnaise and fresh dill), a roasted cauliflower salad gets its quinoa garnish. Even the classic Reuben sandwich—fatty cuts of corned beef served on rye with sauerkraut and Swiss cheese—has a vegan doppelganger made with smoked portobello. But the Jew-ish menu isn’t the only thing veering from tradition—with its historic, psychedelic entrance mural offering a hint into its rock-and-roll history, the deli also features The Russ Room for hosting concerts and art exhibits.
