Auburn has always been known for its Gold Rush charm, but diners hungry for something modern have been flocking to Tap & Vine, a New American eatery with concrete floors, sleek black booths and an expansive patio, since it opened there in late June. Owners Addison and Kate Brown collaborated with chef Darren Thompson, an Auburn native, to create an inventive menu featuring dishes like the crunchy-creamy deep-fried avocado tacos, blistered shishito peppers garnished with bacon streusel, and a fork-tender sous vide braised short rib served with Moroccan couscous and fried cauliflower. The restaurant also boasts a solid lineup of wine and craft beer (hence its name), and even brews its own pale ale, IPA and rye lager. The brunch menu includes fan favorites like a burger made with house-ground beef, an over-easy egg and hollandaise, which you can chase down with a glass of bubbly (or breakfast beer—we won’t judge).
