Essential Information

1112 2nd St.
Sacramento, CA 95814

Dating back to 1960, this Old Sacramento institution is housed in a circa 1853 fire station and boasts one of the best patios in town. The ambience is decidedly Old World decadence, with 19th-century paintings of Yosemite and Rubenesque nudes and candelabras galore. But the food and wine are the real draw, and there’s a new chef at the helm these days. Matty Love, formerly of the Amangani resort in Jackson Hole and Vail Resorts’ Snake River Lodge & Spa, took over last April and is already refreshing the menu that leans on steaks and seafood, finding new dishes to pair with the restaurant’s extraordinary collection of over 16,000 bottles of wine. The wine program is overseen by sommelier and local legend Mario Ortiz, who has logged over 45 years at this Sacramento classic. The sweets—created by pastry chef Ian Cornelius—are also worth savoring, including a Kahlúa dark-chocolate pavé and a vanilla crème brûlée.
