The Jungle Bird
2516 J St.

If what you need is an island vacation, midtown’s buzzy new Jungle Bird offers the draws of a tropical destination without the drawback of spending hours on a plane to get there. Inspired by old-school tiki bars like Trader Vic’s, owners Tyler and Melissa Williams (who also run nearby Tank House BBQ) and Buddy Newby transformed the former Kru locale into a Polynesian paradise with jewel-colored baubles draped in fishnets, bamboo walls, a thatched-roof bar and a custom-carved 8-foot-tall totem pole, as well as the extensive cocktail list with classic rum-based drinks like the 1944 Mai Tai and original concoctions like the Invader’s Bay, a spirit-forward tipple with banana liqueur and bitters. (Tip: Bring a group to try the Three Hour Tour, a tropical punch for six that’s served in a copper flamingo bowl.) Chef Matt Brown’s menu of Asian- and island-inspired eats expertly complements the drinks: The pu-pu platter (which includes succulent kalua pork sliders with pineapple preserves) and dishes like the braised pork belly will have you forgetting your mainland worries.
