Cheesy does it at the fourth annual Sacramento Grilled Cheese Festival

You'll be saying cheese and thank you for the mounds of melty sandwiches at the Sacramento Grilled Cheese Festival, the two-day foodie fête that will host its fourth annual gathering in Southside Park this spring. On Saturday, April 4, there will be unlimited tastes of snack-sized sammies, as well as all-you-can-drink craft beer and wine. Attendees on the first day will have the chance to put in their vote for their favorite grilled cheese. (Tickets to this first day, which is 21-and-over admission, often sell out early.) Meanwhile, Sunday, April 5, will be an all-ages affair, with live music, bounce houses and half-portions of grilled cheese sandwiches available for purchase. A panel of judges will choose the best sandwich in two categories:...

The Sketch Artist

IIn 2005, Carmichael teens Ian Hecox and Anthony Padilla launched a series of goony sketch comedy videos on YouTube, quickly becoming meteoric internet stars under the moniker Smosh. The duo starred in their own feature film, Smosh: The Movie, in 2015, and also voiced characters in the 2016 Angry Birds movie. With more than 25 million subscribers to its channel and 9 billion views and counting, Smosh is taking its act on the road for the first time. The five-city tour will feature Hecox and a small cast, but no Padilla, who left Smosh in 2017. Here, the 32-year-old YouTube star talks about the troupe’s local roots and how audiences will get a “mouthful” during the new live shows. For those who still might not know what Smosh is, how would you describe it? Smosh is...

Food Literacy Center CEO Amber Stott

YYou founded the Food Literacy Center here in 2011. What is food literacy and how do you teach it? We define food literacy as understanding the impact of your food choices on your health, the environment and the economy. Our mission is very simple: We inspire kids to eat their vegetables, and we do that by going into low-income schools to teach cooking and nutrition classes during after-school programs. Right now we are exclusively in Sacramento City Unified schools. That’s largely to do with the fact that we’ve built such a great relationship with the district. It makes it a lot easier for us to reach our kids and be successful doing so. What prompted you to start that work in the first place? I saw that our food system is broken. I started asking around and...

The Fisher King

The Fisher King

On a Thursday in early October, it’s sunny and predictably sleepy in Sloughhouse, a rural community east of Sacramento. Before the GPS could tell me that Passmore Ranch was 1.2 miles up the road, I spotted a familiar landmark: A white, weather-beaten manse that was, in its early aughts heyday, the Southfork of Sloughhouse, where a J.R. Ewing doppelganger might hang his hat. Now the operations headquarters of fish farmer Michael Passmore’s aquaculture and artisan caviar business, the structure is still a stately—and unusual—sight rising from the low hills of golden grass. A nostalgic nod, perhaps, to the landscape of his native North Texas, or the panhandle of Oklahoma, where his maternal grandfather owned a cattle ranch, and where he learned to ride a horse....
