Four harvest festivals help usher in the fall season

From eggplant derbies and mandarin beignets, here are four fun ways to experience the bounty of the region this fall. Loomis Eggplant Festival Oct. 3 You'll find fare like eggplant pizzas or hot dogs with eggplant relish at this 28th annual festival. You can also create eggplant-themed artwork, race to the finish in the Eggonopolis 500 Pinewood Derby, learn how to prepare various dishes with the purple vegetable, or showcase your own cooking skills by entering a homemade eggplant dish in a cooking contest. Sacramento’s first PorchFest turns porches into live music stages

Get ready to stomp, clap and sing to that midtown sound. For the first time in Sacramento, the Sac PorchFest will transform the porches of multiple midtown residences into stages showcasing local artists and musicians. The festival, which takes place on Saturday, Sept. 26, will be centered on the intersection of 21st and I streets, an area known for its Victorian-style homes. Mike Phillips, one of the event’s coordinators, says there are many porch festivals throughout the U.S., but the idea for a local jamboree developed as an effort to unite the community with its local music scene. “It’s really open to the community,” Phillips says. “It’s an opportunity for folks to come together, have some fun and enjoy some great music.” A lineup...

TBD Fest is back for its second year from Sept. 18-20, and it's bigger than ever, with three days of food, art and, of course, music, featuring 90 acts on four different stages along the West Sacramento riverfront. Here are five things you won't want to miss at this year’s festival. The Music Headliners like Chromeo, Tyler the Creator, Canadian synth-pop duo Purity Ring and British new wave pioneers Tears for Fears will lead the lineup at TBD Fest this year.
