In honor of National Archives Month, four local institutions have selected rarely seen artifacts from their troves to display this Saturday as part of the city’s fourth annual Sacramento Archives Crawl. This year’s free event follows the theme “Having Fun in Sacramento.” Patterned after a pub crawl, attendees will imbibe Sacramento’s rich history and catch a glimpse of what people used to do with their leisure time in the river city—where they dined, what sports teams they watched, what music they listened to—courtesy of the historical archives and collections of the Sacramento Public Library, California State Archives, California State Library and the Center for Sacramento History. The destinations will display everything from photos of...

It’s finally here: TBD Fest, the three-day music, arts, food and all-around cultural blowout sweeps into the region this weekend, bringing thousands of fans and revelers to the riverfront in West Sacramento. Headlined by musical acts Moby, Blondie and Justice and nearly 80 other bands and artists from around Sacramento and the world, TBD Fest picks up where Sacramento’s Launch festival left off in 2013. Launch organizers Michael Hargis and Clay Nutting say their rechristened gathering at the River Walk (with “TBD” standing for everything from “The Bridge District”—the budding community that will host the festival—to the more commonly recognized acronym “To Be Determined”) reflects both their city’s and their own...

This weekend, join the Rooftop Alliance as it transforms the roof of a midtown parking garage into UPark 2014, a pop-up urban park offering two days of yoga, dance, art, movies, beer, a mobile produce stand and other offerings. The park will occupy the top floor of the garage at 20th and L streets, previously the site of a bike-in outdoor movie screening this summer. Inspired by parks and gardens on rooftops in cities such as Vancouver and Chicago, the Rooftop Alliance started the UPark event last year in the hopes of making permanent parks and gardens on the rooftops of restaurants, businesses and residential complexes in Sacramento more common and accessible. “As we’re becoming compact in big cities, people are becoming more aware of making the most of our...
