Sacramento's inaugural S’moresfest sweetens the charity pot

Talk about sweet charity. Dessert devotees will be in for a real treat this Saturday, Oct. 12, at the city's inaugural S’moresfest, a grown-up camp-themed fundraiser benefiting the Sacramento Central YMCA. Attendees can gather 'round the fire and channel their inner Tom Colicchio as local dessert chefs see how they stack up against each other in a s’mores contest. Last Tuesday, Oct. 1, Pete’s Restaurant & Brewhouse opened its first Pete’s 7 in downtown Sacramento. Swapping sit-down service for over-the-counter ordering, the local chain’s new more casual concept features a slimmed-down menu offering the seven most popular varieties of its pizza, wings, sandwiches, soups and salads, such as the Pete’s Combo pizza (piled high with meats and veggies like pepperoni, salami, linguica sausage, bell peppers and artichoke hearts) and the steak sandwich with cheddar and BBQ mayo.  Located at 8th and J inside a 3,200-square-foot space that previously housed Wayside Noodles, the offshoot boasts an elevated version of Pete's signature red-and-black décor, with free-hanging Edison bulbs, mod-patterned banquettes...

Sacramento baker releases new cookbook

He's long been known to local chefs for having the best buns in a burger-crazy town, but now home cooks can get their hands on Gregory Berger's simple yet stunningly creative recipes. The Sacramento baker, whose breads have taken home the gold at the California State Fair, has just released his debut cookbook, Buns and Burgers: Handcrafted Burgers from Top to Bottom. The guide, which came out on Sept. 15, features recipes for a whopping 32 different burger buns, ranging from the classic caraway seed to the inventive blue cheese poppy seed. Each set of instructions is paired with a different burger recipe. The underground Honey & the Trapcat to open in Old Sacramento

Honey & the Trapcat, a new dual-concept restaurant and bar, is slated to open at the end of September in a 6,000-square-foot, basement-level spot in the Old Sacramento Waterfront that formerly housed German beer hall Knobs and Knockers. "We're just trying to brighten up the space a little bit, but still keep that underground feel to it,” says owner Brian Matthews, who also serves as the beverage director at Solomon’s Delicatessen, Tiger and Red Rabbit Kitchen & Bar.
