Darling Aviary takes roost downtown

The founders of midtown’s pink-plastered bar and club, Flamingo House, are set to open yet another bird-themed watering hole in late December, Darling Aviary. This new concept, located at The Hardin development near the Downtown Commons, will celebrate all fair fowl, not just one. According to co-owner Amadeu Goncalves, the 2,400-square-foot space evokes the aesthetic of a forgotten Victorian aviary—one that might have held foreign, “exotic” birds like cockatoos or toucans—that has now been simultaneously overrun with vegetation and refurbished with a futuristic aesthetic.

LowBrau's SausageFest returns to midtown for its second year

For better or for wurst, after a two-year hiatus, LowBrau’s SausageFest will make its return to midtown, where 10 Sacramento chefs will dish out carnivorous eats in an attempt to move to the head of Sacramento's brat pack. Judged based on factors like texture, flavor and the ever-important “snap” of the casing, chefs like Canon’s Brad Cecchi, Ed Lopez from Hawks and Mike Thiemann of Empress Tavern and Eric Veldman Miller of V. Miller Meats will duke it out this Sunday, Oct. 20, for both a people’s choice award and a judges' award (which comes with a sausage-themed trophy, natch). While details on the new entries are being kept until wraps, the inaugural event in 2017 saw chefs like Oliver Ridgeway, owner of Camden Spit &...

Sacramento's inaugural S’moresfest sweetens the charity pot

Talk about sweet charity. Dessert devotees will be in for a real treat this Saturday, Oct. 12, at the city's inaugural S’moresfest, a grown-up camp-themed fundraiser benefiting the Sacramento Central YMCA. Attendees can gather 'round the fire and channel their inner Tom Colicchio as local dessert chefs see how they stack up against each other in a s’mores contest. Jackie Robinson from Bacon & Butter will serve up open-faced s’mores constructed out of scratch-made graham crackers, chocolate and marshmallows (all topped with Maldon salt); Cornflower Creamery’s Cynthia Broughton will put a cool spin on the nostalgic snack and dole out s’mores ice cream packed with graham crackers, caramel and dark fudge; and Alisha Lester from party...

Taste: Pete's moves downtown, and other dining news for October

Last Tuesday, Oct. 1, Pete’s Restaurant & Brewhouse opened its first Pete’s 7 in downtown Sacramento. Swapping sit-down service for over-the-counter ordering, the local chain’s new more casual concept features a slimmed-down menu offering the seven most popular varieties of its pizza, wings, sandwiches, soups and salads, such as the Pete’s Combo pizza (piled high with meats and veggies like pepperoni, salami, linguica sausage, bell peppers and artichoke hearts) and the steak sandwich with cheddar and BBQ mayo.  Located at 8th and J inside a 3,200-square-foot space that previously housed Wayside Noodles, the offshoot boasts an elevated version of Pete's signature red-and-black décor, with free-hanging Edison bulbs, mod-patterned banquettes...
