Celestin's restaurant returns to Sacramento with new location, same beloved gumbo

March 15 update: Celestin's relaunched Tuesday, March 13, offering seven versions of its signature gumbo—from vegetarian with zucchini, butternut squash, cremini mushrooms and carrots to protein-heavy with chicken, scallops, shrimp, rock cod and sausage—and other dishes like shrimp Creole, fried plantains and desserts like Key lime pie and a Banbury tart. The eatery is open for lunch and dinner Tuesday through Saturday starting at 11:30 a.m. On Sundays, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., it will host Celestin's Gumbo Brunch, with the same menu plus mimosas and scratch-made pastries, and plans to expand its brunch offerings down the line to include items like Haitian French toast. A new '80s cafe is a blast from the past

If you were first in line to see Star Wars: The Last Jedi last week or binge-watched season two of Stranger Things, or still break out the moonwalk whenever you hear "Billy Jean," a new retro cafe in Rancho Cordova will seem totally tubular. The colorful restaurant, aptly named Back to the ’80s Cafe & More (which originally debuted in 2014 as a collector’s shop), opened on Dec. 2 with MTV music videos lighting up flat screens, movie posters from classics like Goonies and Pretty in Pink , and a Pac-Man machine beeping in the corner. Punch Bowl Social and other Downtown Commons eateries ready to open their doors

This Friday, Dec. 15, Punch Bowl Social will open its Sacramento location in the Downtown Commons (DoCo) plaza, as the newest addition the burgeoning downtown district. The first Northern California location of the Denver-based chain will open its doors at 9 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 15, occupying a two-story, 25,800-square-foot space above the soon-to-open Urban Outfitters store, across the plaza from Golden 1 Center. The chain boasts an "eatertainment" concept, and the River City locale, which can seat upwards of 500 and becomes a 21-and-older establishment after 10 p.m., will feature vintage arcade games (think pinball and Frogger), two four-lane bowling alleys, two bocce ball courts, two soundproof karaoke rooms, and two virtual reality gaming...

A weekly pop-up will serve up fresh doughnuts in midtown starting this Friday

Sweet tooths, set your alarms accordingly: The team behind the upcoming Milk Money doughnut shop will host a weekly pop-up on the outside deck of its sister restaurant LowBrau on Friday mornings starting Dec. 8, offering an ever-changing menu of specialty doughnut concoctions. The pop-ups will run from 9 a.m. until doughnuts run out, or 11 a.m. when LowBrau opens its doors, every Friday until Milk Money—the new doughnut and ice cream concept from Michael Hargis, Brock Macdonald and pastry chef Edward Martinez of the hotly anticipated Beast & Bounty—opens at midtown's Ice Blocks development early next year.
