Ask the Expert 2025

August 8, 2025
Leah Goss,

Angela Strawn
California Northstate University

Angela Strawn, EdD, MSN, RN, is Chair of Nursing and BSN Program Director at California Northstate University (CNU), with decades of leadership in nursing education. Her expertise spans curriculum development, accreditation and community service, with a strong commitment to mentoring future nurse leaders and advancing academic excellence.

What sets California Northstate University’s new nursing program apart from others in the region?

CNU’s nursing program distinguishes itself through a strong emphasis on clinical excellence, leadership and community engagement. Students benefit from small class sizes, a cutting-edge Simulation Center, and collaborative, interprofessional learning with peers in pre-med, pre-dentistry and pre-pharmacy tracks. Our direct-entry, three-year BSN program eliminates the need for reapplication, allowing high school students to apply and stay continuously enrolled through graduation. We are especially proud to support qualified students—including transfers—in achieving their goal of becoming skilled, compassionate nurses.

How is the program addressing the growing demand for qualified nurses in California and beyond?

California’s nursing shortage demands innovative solutions, and our program delivers just that. We are forming strong partnerships with regional healthcare providers and combining top-tier clinical placements with state-of-the-art simulation to ensure the best educational experience. Our integrated curriculum includes service learning, health policy and advocacy to offer a holistic approach that prepares students for today’s complex healthcare environments.

What kind of student are you looking to attract?

We seek students with exceptional academic ability, intellectual curiosity and genuine compassion. Nursing demands trust, care and unwavering commitment, which is why we conduct interviews to better understand each applicant’s motivation and readiness. Our BSN program is rigorous and personalized, crafted for individuals ready to grow into confident, practice-ready nurses. CNU enrolls students year-round and accepts applications for summer, fall and spring terms. Whether you’re a recent graduate or changing careers, we’re here to support your journey. We invite those prepared to lead with both skill and heart to apply today.
