Ask the Expert—Health & Wellness 2025

December 31, 2024
Leah Goss,

Dr. Mohd Khalaf
The Head Pain Center

Dr. Mohd Khalaf is the founder of The Head Pain Center in Roseville. Trained in orofacial pain and oral medicine, Dr. Khalaf is a specialist board-certified by the American Board of Orofacial Pain (ABOP) and a Fellow of the American Academy of Orofacial Pain (FAAOP).

What is your practice philosophy?

We look at the patient as a whole, considering all medical and dental factors affecting their condition. We believe that if we address all the contributing factors, patients will be on a faster track for pain recovery and will experience longer-lasting relief.

Are jaw, ear and neck pain related to headaches?

Not always, but they can be. There are known referral pathways that can cause referred pain from the jaw and neck to the head and vice versa. That is why it is key to look at the condition as a whole and address all the different factors contributing to the patient’s pain instead of only focusing on one aspect of the problem.

What services do you provide?

At The Head Pain Center, we evaluate, diagnose and manage a variety of conditions related to head and neck pain. These include temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, chronic head and neck myofascial pain, headaches, facial neuralgias, referred ear pain and persistent pain after trauma or surgery. We also treat conditions related to oral medicine. We use a wide range of treatments, including nerve blocks, steroid injections, Botox treatment, trigger point injections and more. We also fabricate customized oral appliances for TMJ disorders and obstructive sleep apnea.
