Family-Owned Businesses 2024

March 1, 2023
Leah Goss,

MAK Design + Build
Ellen Moriarty, Ken Kirsch, Silas Kirsch & Vivi Kirsch

A residential remodeling business might not seem like the natural path for husband-and-wife duo Ken and Ellen, who initially met in their artistic pursuits as painter and florist. However, when you consider the creativity and nurturing that running a remodeling business requires, it begins to make sense.

Since moving their young family from SF to Davis and launching MAK Design + Build, Inc. in 2003, the pair have seen many families make that same move from the Bay to the Sacramento area. And throughout those years the MAK team has been dedicated to creating homes that celebrate the uniqueness of each family, finding solutions to the problems older homes tend to pose, and delivering an experience that recognizes that homes are expressive spaces and remodeling is personal.

Now, twenty years on, the MAK team includes daughter Vivi, whose lifetime of exposure to the company and the community uniquely qualifies her for her sales and management roles, and son Silas, who is adding his talents to the production staff. This isn’t just a job for them, it’s a shared commitment to a family legacy built on creativity, care and craftsmanship.
