Sactown magazine, the largest and most respected magazine in the Sacramento region, is looking for a new Account Executive to join our team.
If you’re good at sales, don’t sell widgets. Sell a product you can believe in. Sactown was started by two national magazine journalists (one born and raised in Sacramento) who are committed to spotlighting Sacramento’s best and brightest people, and advancing bold ideas to push the city forward. The bimonthly magazine is owned and edited by former writers for Money magazine, InStyle, The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, who bring a strong civic mission to the magazine, combined with national-caliber journalism, photography and design. We’ve even been written up in The New York Times! If you’re passionate about Sacramento, you’ll be in very good company here.
This is a great opportunity to use your sales abilities to develop new business (both print and online) and to work directly with our marketing partners to help them grow their businesses by finding the right advertising plans for them. We’re looking for at least 2 to 3 years of in-person, consultative sales experience. The right candidate will be goal-driven, a problem solver, creative and have strong verbal and written communication skills. Loving Sacramento is a bonus.
The magazine also takes Covid-19 safety issues very seriously, and moved to work-from-home status before it was even required to do so in March 2020. The Sactown team, which is 100% vaccinated, will only return to the office only when it becomes fully safe to do so, and when it does, it will adopt a hybrid office-home work schedule (Tuesdays through Thursdays at the office, and Mondays and Fridays working remotely). All new staffers *must* be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 and be able to provide verification of such.
Our new office is located in midtown Sacramento, amidst many of the city’s best restaurants and shops. The office does not have an open floor plan; rather, it features almost entirely private offices and a brand-new air purification system installed in the HVAC system.

Retail Sales Coordinator
Sactown magazine, Sacramento’s largest and most award-winning city magazine, has an immediate opening for a part-time Retail Sales Coordinator to help manage and monitor its newsstand displays in about 60 locations throughout the Sacramento region. Your people skills are needed to work with in-store personnel to ensure maximum exposure for the magazine.
While the wholesaler distributes the magazine and stocks the displays, you will assist by monitoring inventory and appearance, and maintaining stock throughout the issue’s 8-week selling cycle.
In addition to these responsibilities, you will have the important task of managing the sale of Sactown to non-traditional, direct retail accounts that are not serviced by the wholesaler, such as cafes, specialty delis and bookstores. There is also an opportunity to develop and grow Sactown’s direct accounts.
If you are reliable, have strong communication (to keep both us and the grocery stores apprised of issues that may arise), can manage your time well, and have some innate selling skills (no sales experience necessary), this may be a good fit for you. Knowledge of the Sacramento region (roads and places) a plus, but GPS will be your friend in this position.
You can expect to work 80 hours per bimonthly issue on average, with potential commissionable sales opportunities also available. The beginning and middle of the issue’s 8-week selling cycle requires the most hours.
You will be responsible for checking all accounts throughout the region within roughly the first week of an issue’s release, and again halfway through the on-sale period.
This role is designed for an independent contractor with hourly compensation.

- The ability to lift 35 pound boxes of magazines short distances
- Cell phone
- A computer with Word and Excel
