Kick off Super Bowl Sunday at a super-sized fun run
This Super Bowl Sunday, Sacramentans will get a chance to show their team spirit at the Super Sunday Run, featuring a 5K and 10K race, kids' fun runs, a tailgate party, live music and food trucks.
The sixth annual event—featuring runs that wind through the tree-lined campus of Sacramento State (as well as a kids' 1K run/walk, and a pee-wee 40-yard dash)—is expected to draw about 3,000 participants, with proceeds supporting local youth and high school sport programs. Runners are encouraged to wear their favorite NFL team jerseys during the event.
“We’re trying to enhance the excitement around what is now basically a de facto American holiday,” says Scott Abbott, executive director of the Sacramento Running Association, which hosts the race this Sunday, Feb. 1. “This is your ticket to the guilt-free Super Bowl. Come on out and do something fun, healthy and fit in the morning and then go home to drink some beer, eat some food and watch football.”
Along the 5K and 10K courses, local band The Marcels will keep runners moving until they cross the finish line inside Hornet Stadium. The post-race tailgate party will be rocking with music from Jack FM, high school marching band drum lines, cheerleaders and video game trucks featuring Madden Challenge. To refuel, runners can visit food trucks like Drewski’s Hot Rod Kitchen, indulge in football-themed desserts from Nothing Bundt Cakes and cool down with free beer from Midtown's Der Biergarten.
5K is $30 through Jan. 30 and $35 Jan. 31–Feb. 1. 10K is $40 through Jan. 30 and $45 Jan. 31–Feb. 1. Kids runs free. Feb. 1. 8:30 a.m. Hornet Stadium. 6000 J St. 983-4622. runsupersunday.org
