Backbone Café
Essential Information
A vegan yogi, a paleo CrossFitter and a gluten-free foodie walk into a cafe—what sounds like the lead up to a millennial punch line could just be a typical party of three at this cozy new downtown spot from the Woolston family (Matteo’s Pizza & Bistro, Crocker Cafe by Supper Club) that opened in December. Vegans can sit and feast on mushroom carnitas tacos with roasted vegetables (next to a mushroom-themed woodland mural by local artist Irubiel Moreno), while hunter-gatherers can dig into the coconut beef curry bowl and burgers with grass-fed patties (all of Backbone Café’s produce is organic and everything on the menu is gluten-free except for the breads, which include a sans-gluten bun option from Pushkin’s Bakery). Curious about the “butter coffee” craze? Indulge in a foamy, frothy cup, or swap the caffeine for collagen with a cup of chicken or beef bone broth made with meat from Marin Sun Farms.
