Best of the City 2026: Best Japanese Petit Fours
Handcrafted, tasty pillows of mochi delight are a specialty for this Roseville-based online shop and pop-up, placing these delicious quartets among the dozens of people, places and things that we loved this year. Here's one of our picks for Best of the City 2026.
Sweet dreams are made of this. That’s what we’ve been thinking ever since we took our first bite of Sugar Flour and Milk’s marshmallowy, velvety mochi. Specializing in daifuku (rice cake with filling), mochi magician Kelly Vu—who launched her Roseville-based online shop last September—handcrafts each orb using ingredients like organic milk and organic sugar to create the dessert equivalent of a plush down pillow wrapped in a mulberry silk case. Available in customizable four-piece boxes, the daifuku mounds come in a rotating lineup of fillings—our favorites include Dubai chocolate, pistachio butter and salted egg yolk—to choose from almost every Monday morning, when Vu accepts orders on Instagram, or at events like Bloom Market in Curtis Park. Word to the wise: Order or arrive as early as you can. The weekly batches sell out within minutes and lines quickly form around the block at pop-ups. In other words, you won’t want to sleep on these dreamy delights. @sugarflourandmilk on Instagram
