Ask the Expert 2025

August 8, 2025
Leah Goss,

Maura Cromwell
Shalom School

Maura Cromwell, Director of Curriculum and Instruction, brings over 15 years of classroom teaching experience to her leadership role. She oversees curriculum development, instructional support and teacher growth across grades and programs. Maura is deeply committed to Shalom School’s mission—to provide each child with an outstanding education in a nurturing environment that is academically excellent, inclusive, innovative and inspired by Jewish values and traditions.

What makes your elementary school’s approach to teaching and learning unique in the Sacramento area?

At Shalom School, academic excellence is our foundation. Our full-day kindergarten and elementary programs offer rigorous, research-based instruction in literacy, math, science and critical thinking. Credentialed teachers provide personalized support in a warm, nurturing environment. Students also enjoy enriching specialist classes in art, music, media, P.E. and STEAM, as well as second language instruction in Hebrew. What sets us apart is how we blend strong academics with values-based education that builds character, community and a love of learning.

How does your preschool and pre-K program prepare students for success in the elementary years?

Shalom School’s NAEYC-accredited preschool, beginning at 18 months, lays a strong foundation for academic and social-emotional success. Children develop confidence, independence and collaboration skills through a balance of play and structure. Teachers introduce early numeracy, literacy and problem-solving in a caring, supportive setting. Music, movement and cultural experiences enrich daily learning. Our preschoolers grow into capable, curious learners who are ready to thrive in kindergarten. Families leave our preschool feeling confident that their child is ready socially, emotionally and academically.

How does your school prepare students not just academically, but socially and emotionally for the future?

At Shalom School, we nurture both academic growth and character development. Social-emotional learning is integrated into daily routines, emphasizing empathy, resilience and communication. Students build confidence, self-awareness and a strong sense of identity in a community that values respect and belonging. This foundation helps them develop emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills alongside academic excellence. By graduation, our students are not only well-prepared for future academic challenges but also equipped to lead with compassion and purpose.
