The Hearing Solution
At The Hearing Solution, a boutique private practice owned by audiologist Kirsten McWilliams, patients receive medically based hearing care that goes beyond basic screenings. She and Dr. Elizabeth Barragan earned their doctorates in audiology from the University of the Pacific and provide comprehensive diagnostics, real-ear verification, and evidence-based fittings. Dr. Rachel Bellotti adds specialized expertise in implantable hearing solutions when hearing aids are no longer enough.
Is hearing loss connected to cognitive issues in older adults?
Research shows that the brain works harder to fill in missing sound information, which may reduce resources for memory and processing. At The Hearing Solution, we use medically based evaluations to identify changes early, to guide treatment instead of simply amplifying sound. Our goal is to restore access to speech so the brain isn’t constantly compensating. Supporting communication is key to supporting cognitive wellness, helping patients stay mentally active. Hearing loss often leads to avoiding or not fully participating in conversations, causing someone to become disengaged. Our goal is to prevent that spiral by restoring clarity through personalized programming so patients can comfortably participate and regain access to social and cognitive stimulation.
Can hearing aids support cognitive wellness?
Yes, when they’re fit correctly. We use real-ear verification to program devices based on each patient’s ear canal acoustics, not generic settings. This reduces listening effort and improves confidence in communication. Treatment success isn’t based on volume—it’s measured by clarity, comfort and real-world participation.
What if hearing aids aren’t enough?
When inner ear damage limits hearing aid benefit, cochlear implants may offer better clarity. They bypass damaged hair cells and stimulate the hearing nerve directly. We provide candidacy evaluations, coordinate surgical referrals, and deliver activation and mapping services to support long-term success. We help patients understand each step of the implant process.
