In 2002, you were the first firm to successfully try an elder abuse case to a jury in Sacramento County. How has that shaped how you help families today?
It taught us early the importance of being experts on industry regulations and tracking long-term care industry trends. Our clients feel betrayed by a long-term care industry that is broken and stole their ability to age with independence, dignity and respect. One way they can leave a legacy is to work with us to find justice and influence change through the legal system.
What changes in long-term care should families know about?
The industry is growing rapidly, and so is the gap between what facilities promise and the care the residents actually receive. In response, more seniors are choosing to age in place at home. To capitalize on this trend, many nursing home operators have introduced in-home care services targeting seniors who can afford them. A word of caution: Some of these providers may be the very same nursing home operators seniors are trying to avoid.
How do you prepare clients when you take a case?
We start by assisting prospective clients with getting their medical records. We then walk families through their rights because no one should make legal decisions in the dark. We handle the legal complexity so families can focus on healing. Throughout the process, our priorities are clear communication, steady guidance and the pursuit of justice for your loved ones.
