A new taproom and eatery to open on K Street soon

Sacramento's beer boom will get a new addition later this month as Brü Co. Taproom, a new bar-slash-eatery co-owned by husband-and-wife teams Justin and Jennifer MacClanahan and Ryan and Sandy Melching, will open near the corner of 9th and K streets, two blocks east of the Golden 1 Center. Justin says the team plans to hold their soft opening within the next two weeks, with plans for a grand opening during the first week of July.
The 1,900-square-foot space is on the ground floor of the Forum Building and above the popular basement-level Coin-Op Game Room. Brü Co. will have more than 20 beers and ciders on tap, featuring local breweries like Elk Grove’s Flatland, Rancho Cordova’s Claimstake and El Dorado Hills’ Mraz, while also serving up out-of-towners like Bakersfield’s Dionysus and Oxnard’s Casa Agria Specialty Ales.
“We’re trying to bring in things from across California that people can’t regularly find that are exciting to them,” says Justin, whose inspiration to open Brü Co. stemmed from his father Jim, who used to manage a Coast Guard bar called the Hideaway Club in Barber’s Point, Hawaii.
The co-owners plan to take advantage of the heavy foot traffic on K Street during busy lunch hours by adding a rotating food menu that offers New American-style fare, which will include paninis, salads, and cheese and charcuterie platters, partially sourced from nearby farmers’ markets at Cesar Chavez Plaza and on Capitol Mall.
“It’s really a shame to not go and find local, fresh and awesome ingredients from these [farmers’ markets] to make quality food,” says Justin. “And we believe that there’s enough of a calling around here in downtown for good, fresh and high quality food.”
Jennifer, who assisted in the remodeling of New Glory Craft Brewery in January, is designing Brü Co.’s interior, which features white and blue-gray walls with a few signature Brü Co. lime green accents to help brighten up the space.
The bar’s white herringbone tile backsplash also compliments its 22-foot-long dark gray granite countertop to enhance Brü Co.’s intended cool pub vibe, while the dining area includes a built-in corner bench and a handmade 10-foot-long wooden communal table, as well as drink rails along a wall with two 8-foot-wide glass windows where patrons can overlook Coin-Op’s lively outdoor patio.
“I thought about mounting a projector and projecting sports or other things through [the arch windows] against Coin-Op’s brick wall,” says Justin. “Maybe that’s down the road if [Coin-Op is] on board.”
The taproom will also have its own patio space on K Street. The hours for Brü Co. will be Sunday-Wednesday 11 a.m.-11 p.m. and Thursday-Saturday 11 a.m.-2 a.m.
