It’s a pleasure to find good Indian food, at long last, in midtown—the more so as Bombay Bar and Grill occupies a formerly forlorn space on 21st Street, once home to a revolving door of mediocre, anonymous places. No more: The space is thoroughly spruced up with colorful fixtures (love the turquoise bar, backed by mosaic tile), gold accents and appealingly ornate upholstery. Matching the surroundings is a solid menu of Indian fare, including the mild (such as buttery chicken tikka masala), sizzling tandoori dishes of all types, more unusual choices like lal maas (a brick-red Rajasthani lamb curry, subtly spiced) and spicy fare like vindaloo. Vegetarians won’t go hungry here, as there’s a great selection of veggie dishes, including a full appetizer sampler with pakoras, samosas and more. But never fear, carnivores: There’s a meat sampler, too.
