A 35-minute drive from Sacramento (though there’s a smaller Sacramento outpost at 18th and L), this Winters eatery is a carnivore’s paradise. High ceilings are lined with trophy heads from nearly every hoofed creature under the sun, so don’t bring your PETA friends. The house specialty is the char-roasted sirloin, a tri-tip roast served with crispy onions. But it’s worth going for the free sourdough bread alone. Baked fresh all day and night, it’s crunchy on the outside, hot and soft on the inside. Fun fact: The hand-drawn illustration of the Buckhorn building on the menu was rendered by none other than one-time Winters resident and cartoon deity R. Crumb.
