What is an advanced practice provider?
An advanced practice provider (APP) is a licensed clinician with advanced training and education with a master’s or doctoral degree. APPs can diagnose and treat acute and chronic health problems, prescribe medications, order and interpret diagnostic tests, and perform procedures. APPs include nurse practitioners, nurse-midwives, nurse anesthetists and physician associates. They typically work collaboratively with their physician colleagues in primary and specialty care in the hospital and outpatient settings, and in some states can also practice independently.
How can an APP help with my ENT care?
In an otolaryngology specialty, APPs provide comprehensive services to diagnose and treat disorders of the ear, nose and throat and often increase access to care. APPs’ scope of practice includes completing histories and physical exams, as well as ordering and interpreting audiograms, X-rays, MRIs, CT scans and lab tests. APPs can also perform diagnostic tests such as nasal endoscopies, biopsies and laryngoscopies. APPs prescribe medications, or other treatments such as ear cleanings, and provide patient education.
What type of conditions do the APPs treat in your practice?
The APPs manage a wide variety of ENT conditions for pediatric and adult patients. Some common conditions include hearing loss, sleep disordered breathing, ear and throat infections and sinusitis. We also treat nasal polyps, chronic cough, dizziness and hoarse voice. Additionally, we collaborate with our physician colleagues and assist with pre- and post-operative care for patients undergoing surgery. In our allergy practice, the APP also provides comprehensive allergy and immunology care.
