It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas in Sacramento with tree lightings, ice skating and even a pop-up holiday cocktail bar underway. The 12 Days of Midtown, the neighborhood’s annual marathon of spirited events, will add to the festivities from Dec. 1-12 with everything from horse-drawn carriage rides and a hot toddy competition to a doggie pub crawl.

On Friday, Dec. 1, pop in to Ginger Elizabeth Chocolates for the boutique’s unveiling of its holiday macarons (including a peppermint version with pearl sprinkles and a frosted gingersnap flavor filled with vanilla buttercream), then celebrate the howl-idays with your four-legged friends on Saturday, Dec 2. when Der Biergarten hosts an ugly sweater social for canines and the Sacramento SPCA launches its inaugural Jingle Bell Walk, a pup-friendly pub crawl to bars like LowBrau that will begin at Truitt Bark Park and feature photos with Santa and free doggie Christmas stockings.

On the fifth day of the event series, bottles of bourbon will be flying at The Golden Bear for its seventh annual hot toddy competition emceed by bartender Andrew Calisterio. Taste each of the contestants' warm concoctions and then chill to Sacramento-based DJ Crook.

On Dec. 9, shop for handmade gifts like throw pillows made out of repurposed burlap coffee bags at Identity Coffees’ holiday bizarre, or go back in time to the 1850s for A Simple Emigrant Christmas at Sutter’s Fort. Then stroll through Handle District to hear carolers dressed in Dickensian attire sing classic holiday tunes, take a horse-drawn carriage ride and watch the Luminaria lighting at dusk—during which storefronts are lined with glowing candles. Catch a matinee on Dec. 10, when Capital Stage puts on Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley, a production that plays sequel to Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice.

Additional highlights include the Sacramento Gay Men’s Chorus holiday concert on Dec. 3, art workshops like a succulent-wreath-decorating workshop at the Sacramento Natural Foods Co-op on Dec. 6., and ugly Christmas sweater bingo at Federalist Public House on Dec. 9.
