Six ways to get your sugar fix on National Doughnut Day

D'oh! National Doughnut Day is about to roll around again on Friday, June 5. In case you're unprepared, we’ve baked up a list of six sweet spots around town where you can celebrate this hole-y holiday.
Baker's Donuts
Cool off this summer with ice cream-stuffed doughnuts from this South Sacramento bakery, which fills its sugar-glazed doughnuts with exotic flavors like pandam (green coconut) and ube (purple yam). Plus, try other sweet creations like Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup-filled cronuts. To celebrate National Doughnut Day, Baker’s Donuts will roll out specials this Friday, including 90-cent doughnuts, peanut butter and jelly-filled doughnuts and a doughnut burger, which sandwiches sweet and tangy Asian-styled pulled pork between two freshly baked maple bacon cronuts. Mon.-Sat. 4 a.m.-8 p.m. Sun. 4 a.m.-5 p.m. 5880 Florin Rd. 392-8466. Baker's Donuts' Instagram page
Danny’s Mini Donuts
For treats that won’t break the bank or your diet, head to this Old Sacramento storefront for a mini indulgence. Visitors can watch hot, silver dollar-sized doughnuts roll off the assembly line and drop into a basket before being topped with powdered sugar, cinnamon sugar, vanilla, chocolate frosting or sprinkles. (Or try the shop's newest flavor, the maple-glazed doughnuts.) Baked to a light and crispy texture through a secret technique created by owner Danny Johnson, these tiny treats can now be enjoyed outside of the historic district, thanks to a new doughnut cart service that Johnson started for events like weddings and birthday parties. Mon.-Fri. 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Sat. 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Sun. 9 a.m.-6 p.m. 900 2nd St. 498-9255. dannysminidonuts.net
Dr. Bob’s Donuts & DoYos
This Roseville doughnut house, known for its organic, low-calorie creations, is set up like a frozen yogurt shop. Patrons begin with a gluten-free and vegan doughnut made entirely from whole grains, which they can top off with other healthy ingredients such as fresh fruit, honey oat granola, chia seeds, as well as house-made glazes, including acai chia pudding and dairy-free salted caramel sauce. Before weighing your creation by the register, be sure to get the full “doyo” experience by adding the shop’s dairy-free and low-sugar frozen yogurt in classic flavors like vanilla and chocolate. Fri. 7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Sat. & Sun. 9 a.m.-6 p.m. 336 Lincoln St. Roseville. 742-5241. drbobsmix.com
Java Time Donuts
Start the morning of National Doughnut Day with a massive sugar rush at this local bakery serving up 24-inch doughnuts ordered pizza-style at its two Elk Grove locations. Customers start with their choice of classic chocolate or maple glazes, and proceed to top the enormous baked treat with an array of toppings like mini M&M’s, bacon bits, animal crackers, crushed Oreos and Fruity Pebbles cereal. And like a pizza pie, the massive doughnuts can even be split into halves or eighths with different glazes and toppings on each slice. Smaller appetites can also celebrate the sweet yearly occasion with Java Time's doughnuts holes or s’mores éclairs. Mon.-Fri. 5 a.m.-5 p.m. Sat. & Sun. 5 a.m.-2 p.m. Elk Grove locations: 7811 Laguna Blvd. (684-9696) and 2745 Elk Grove Blvd. (684-7880)
Marie’s Doughnuts
This beloved, walk-up doughnut stand in Land Park opens its window at 11 p.m. to start slinging its freshly baked basics, and stays open as late night becomes early morning so folks can grab a midnight snack or start their morning commute with a sugar fix. Try the bakery’s classic maple-glazed doughnuts and bar (which can also be filled with house-made, fluffy whipped cream or warm creamy custard) or munch on the shop’s signature apple fritter topped with warm and syrupy cubes of the round fruit. 11. p.m.-4 p.m. daily. 2950 Freeport Blvd. 444-5245
The Parlor
Two sinfully delicious desserts—cold, custom-crafted Gunther's ice cream and warm, burger-sized doughnuts—come together to make a heavenly match for this Arden-Arden shop's signature "ice cream puffs." The ever-changing menu boasts new perfect pairings with each visit, but popular combos include an apple fritter (ask for it to be heated) stuffed with "Thai Tease" ice cream (which blends vanilla and Thai tea flavors), or sea salt caramel ice cream sandwich-pressed inside a sweet glazed doughnut. Sun.-Wed. noon-10 p.m. Thurs.-Sat. noon-11 p.m. 2620 Fair Oaks Blvd. 977-3997. theparloricecream.com
