Taste: The region's latest food, drink and restaurant news for April 7
In this week’s restaurant news, a midtown gelateria expanding to East Sacramento, a new brewery in Elk Grove, a juicery finding a fresh new home in Davis and a popular downtown cafe extending its hours.
Ambrosia Café
At the end of March, this bustling K Street cafe extended its hours to be open Tuesday through Saturday until 8 p.m. (Previously the shop closed at 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays and 3 p.m. on Saturdays.) Manager Kim Anderson says the new hours are in anticipation of Golden 1 Center opening downtown in the fall. Anderson says while the menu probably won’t change for the evening hours, Ambrosia will focus its nighttime menu on beer and wine from local producers (Ambrosia has been carrying beers from Track 7 and New Glory for some time, but will be adding more to the mix), and may consider adding a happy hour down the line. 1030 K St. 444-8129. ambrosiafinefood.com
Devine Gelateria & Cafe
This midtown gelato haven is planning to expand to East Sacramento this June. Owner Elizabeth McCleary is opening a new location at 36th Street and McKinley Boulevard under a slightly different name, Devine Bakery & Gelateria. McCleary plans to open early and offer morning pastries like scones and muffins, as well as crepes, Belgian waffles, espresso drinks and drip coffee. The shop will also feature rotating cakes—like its signature German chocolate cake—whole and by the slice, as well as 12 flavors of gelato. Sun & Soil Juice Company
The organic juicery opened a new location March 1 in Davis down the street from the Davis Food Co-op. This shop is the third location for owners Molly Brown and Tatiana Kaiser, who opened their midtown flagship in June 2014 and also share space with Insight Coffee at the Powerhouse Building at 16th and P streets. The Davis store, which is open seven days a week, carries Sun & Soil’s cold-pressed juices (like the Beauty & the Beet with carrots, beets, apple and ginger) as well as its new line of teas (like Turmeric Tea, made with turmeric, ginger, chamomile, honey and dandelion and licorice roots), which the midtown store makes and delivers to the other two locations. 527 G St. Davis. 341-0327. sunandsoiljuice.com
Tilted Mash Brewing
Tilted Mash Brewing held its grand opening at its Elk Grove location April 1. Owners Derrick Prasad and Jonathan Martinez—Elk Grove residents who have been home brewing together for about seven years—opened the doors of the minimalist industrial space with five beers on their eight taps, including the Enamel Assassin double IPA, White Gummy Bear pineapple saison, Hoppy Jefe wheat IPA, Eskimo Brothers coffee milk stout and Parental Responsibility citra cream ale. Prasad says the pair plans to keep a couple of flagship beers (among them will most likely be the Enamel Assassin) and rotate the other taps with seasonal and small batch beers based on customer requests. The brewery—which gets its name from the duo dropping their mash tun (a vessel that helps convert the starches in crushed grains to sugar) so often that it needed to be tilted on its side for usage—is currently open Fridays through Sundays. 9110 Union Park Way.
