Treat Mom to one of these five great Mother's Day brunches

If Mom would fancy attending a tea party or running a 5K, check out our list of festive Mother’s Day events throughout the region. But if a scrumptious brunch is more her speed, look no further than these five restaurants, which will be serving up everything from honey-buttered biscuits to honey walnut prawns.

Formaggio Taverna & Patio

This elegant restaurant in Rancho Cordova will be dishing out a buffet with creative breakfast and lunch entrées for the occasion, such as eggs Benedict with prosciutto or whole roasted snapper served in banana leaves and spiced with ginger, chili and onions. Check out the paella station with saffron rice and offerings like chorizo and chicken, or dig into a seafood feast of crab legs, fresh tuna poke, shrimp and oysters. Frank Fat’s

If Mom loves hometown traditions, take her to this famed downtown restaurant, which has been serving up refined Chinese dishes since it opened in 1939. Mother’s Day brunch will start with a dim sum buffet of pot stickers, vegetable spring rolls, pork shu mei, and the popular yu kwok (fried pork and beef dumplings served with four spicy and sweet dipping sauces). From there, guests can browse a hot and cold buffet featuring everything from king crab, sushi and steamed Atlantic cod to Fat’s addictive honey walnut prawns. For dessert, nab a slice of the legendary banana cream pie, which Frank Fat himself, along with chef Bob How, created over 75 years ago. $36 ($14.95 for children 5-12; free for children under 5). 11 a.m.-3 p.m. 806 L St. 442-7092.

Hawks Restaurant

Chef-owners Molly Hawks and Michael Fagnoni of this celebrated Granite Bay eatery will treat its loyal locavores to a Mother’s Day brunch of thoughtful, regionally sourced food, beginning with house-made buttermilk biscuits for the table paired with honey butter and strawberry jam using fresh fruit from Saeng's Strawberry Stand. For the main course, choose between the slow-roasted New York strip with a poached egg, potato rösti and béarnaise sauce or the Alaskan halibut with smoked ham, English peas, fingerling potatoes and hollandaise. Taylor’s Kitchen

The annex to Land Park’s cozy Taylor’s Market is offering both a Mother’s Day brunch and dinner on the holiday Sunday. Brunch begins with house-made breakfast pastries, fresh fruit and a green salad of chopped apples, walnuts and fennel with cider vinaigrette. Then you can treat Mom to either a vegetarian quiche or quiche Lorraine, a savory custard stuffed with bacon and creamy Gruyère cheese, which can be paired with traditional fixings like bacon, sausage and roasted potatoes. In the evening, Taylor's chef Casey Shideler will whip up some of her favorite dishes, which may include Alaskan salmon, filet mignon and a vegetarian option like risotto. At this Old Sacramento favorite, executive chef Jay Veregge has assembled a three-course meal for Mother’s Day, starting with your choice of strawberry and almond salad with poppy seed vinaigrette or asparagus bisque with a truffle crouton. The entrée course features everything from a rack of spring lamb served with bacon-braised greens to a seared salmon roti with spring pea risotto and mint pesto. On the sweet side, there’s French toast with Grand Marnier and strawberry compote, served with a side of chicken-apple sausage. And if Mom has room for dessert, she might love either the wild berry shortcake with Chantilly cream or the Dutch cocoa mousse cake with caramel sauce. $42.95 ($8.95 for kids ages 10 and under). 10 a.m.-7p.m. 1022 2nd St. 441-2211.
