Where to get your gooey fix on National S'mores Day

You may have forgotten to put it on your calendar this year, but National S’mores Day is rolling around again this Sunday (time flies, right?). But if you don't have a roaring campfire handy for proper s'more assembly, don't panic. We've got the next best thing—a handy list of sweet treats inspired by the real deal, running the gamut from hot, gooey milk chocolate fondue to Nutella-drizzled artisan waffles. Trust us; you won't be able to get enough. You'll definitely want, ahem, some more.
Cafeteria 15L
Presented in a cast-iron skillet, Cafeteria 15L’s Skillet S’mores plate puts a new spin on the classic campfire treat. The dessert features a rich Valrhona chocolate brownie, which is covered with marshmallows and given a quick spin in the broiler—yep, the broiler—for a toasty caramelized finish. The skillet is then ringed with graham crackers and topped with pieces of Hershey’s chocolate. 1116 15th St. 492-1960. cafeteria15l.com
Cookie Connection
Cookie Connection’s chewy s’mores cookie—replete with semi-sweet chocolate chunks, graham cracker and marshmallows—is far from a cookie-cutter treat. It’s available daily at each of Cookie Connection’s four Sacramento-area locations and made from scratch every morning. For those on the downtown grid, pick up the sweet treat Monday through Friday (400 Capital Mall; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.) at the brand-new Cookie Connection shop that opened in June inside the Wells Fargo Center. cookieconnection.com
Devine Gelateria
Although Devine Gelateria’s creamy s’mores gelato isn’t available every day, it still ranks as one of the charming midtown spot’s most popular flavors, and it’s easy to see (and taste) why: The delectable treat boasts layers of luscious vanilla gelato, graham crackers, fudge sauce, and a marshmallow Italian meringue, which gets a light toasting from a kitchen torch. 1221 19th St. 446-0600. devinegelateria.com
Munnerlyn’s Ice Creamery
If the valley heat is getting to you, take a cruise into the foothills on Highway 88 to tiny Pine Grove, where Munnerlyn’s Ice Creamery churns out some of the best ice cream around. Their Roaring Camp S'mores flavor boasts graham cracker and brown sugar swirls, chocolate chunks, and mini-marshmallows. Try it in one of their three house-made cones for a crisp counterpoint to the creamy goodness. 20145 Hwy. 88. Pine Grove. 209-296-4400
The Melting Pot
The Melting Pot’s Chocolate S’mores fondue is a chocolate lover’s dream: the dessert features a pot of flambéed milk chocolate fondue with marshmallow cream and a sprinkle of graham crackers. An array of dippers like strawberries, Rice Krispie treats, brownie chunks and marshmallows accompany the molten chocolate mixture. Ask your server to sprinkle cinnamon onto the fondue flame, causing the flare to flicker and glow like a real campfire. 814 15th St. 443-2347. meltingpot.com
The Waffle Experience
This new Natomas eatery, which just opened its doors last week, offers a breakfast of champions that perfectly sates a s’mores craving: the Smor’Tella waffle platter, which features caramelized bananas, Nutella, homemade marshmallows, toasted graham crackers, and a drizzle of a chocolaty rum sauce, all atop a toasted cacao waffle. Heads up: this spot is only open on weekdays for now (from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.), so you’ll need to get your fix either before or after National S’mores Day. 391 Gateway Park Blvd. 285-0562. thewaffleexperience.com
