5 sweet Sacramento spots to enjoy National Doughnut Day
Nobody needs an excuse to enjoy a fantastic doughnut. But if you only choose one day to indulge in some of the finest sweet, versatile confections Sacramento has to offer, make it National Doughnut Day, which takes place across the country on Friday, June 6. Here are five locations around town to make the most of this hole-y occasion.
This doughnut destination near Southside Park makes its tasty offerings fresh daily, boasting unique flavor combos like the perennial favorites lemon-lavender and deluxe doughnuts like the Big Lebowski ode The Dude (filled with White Russian cream and topped with a Kahlua reduction glaze) and margarita-tinged lime-coconut malasada (filled with lime-coconut custard and dusted with li hing sugar). Vegan options abound as well, and there’s good news for offices on the grid: Doughbot offers downtown-area delivery for orders of a dozen or more via Edible Pedal. 7 a.m.-noon. 2226 10th St. 916-444-5157. doughbotdonuts.com
Every Friday is doughnut day at Estelle’s, the K Street bakery and lunch spot that features a different version of its filled brioche donuts every week. (This week’s flavor: Boston crème.) Previous offerings like key lime, raspberry crème, chocolate, and salted creamy caramel pair Estelle’s dense but fluffy dough with custard filling that is light, creamy and not too sweet. Visit the shop on Sundays and Tuesdays as well for its cinnamon-sugar coated croixnut, Estelle’s variation on the delicious (and dangerously decadent) croissant-doughnut mashup sweeping the nation. 7 a.m.-5 p.m. 901 K St. 916-551-1500. estellespatisserie.com
New Roma Bakery
Midtown’s neighborhood bakery on E Street takes Doughnut Day's delight to the next level with its “Texas doughnut,” an epic sweet treat that measures about eight inches across. Like their smaller cousins, these behemoths come in all the classic favorites including glazed, sugar, maple, sprinkled and chocolate walnut. Whether you share the Texas doughnut or keep it to yourself, New Roma’s offering will hold you over to until Donut Day 2015 without too much trouble. 6 a.m.-5:30 p.m. 1800 E St. 916-443-2346.
Danny’s Mini Donuts
To experience the opposite side of the spectrum from Lone Star-sized doughnuts, head to this Old Sacramento storefront for a fistful of its namesake sweet treats. Visitors can watch hot doughnuts roll off the assembly line and drop into a basket before taking advantage of one of the city’s finest doughnut deals: A half-dozen minis actually includes eight minis for $4, and a dozen includes 16 minis for $6). Top them with powdered sugar, cinnamon sugar, vanilla or chocolate frosting and sprinkles and devour them while they're still warm. 7 a.m.-6 p.m. 900 2nd St. 916-498-9255. dannysminidonuts.net
A Sacramento institution, this walk-up doughnut stand in Land Park cracks its window at 11 p.m. to start slinging its freshly baked basics, and stays open as late night becomes early morning so folks can grab a midnight snack after the night’s festivities or start their morning commute with a sugar fix. Whenever you go, try the warm glazed old fashioned to make the most of the doughnut's special day. 11 p.m.-4 p.m. 2950 Freeport Blvd. 916-444-5245.
