First purveyor announced for planned food hall, The Bank

Shrimp and grits, anyone? The Bank, downtown’s buzzy new food hall located inside the elegant 1912 D.O. Mills bank building at 6th and J streets, has secured its first tenant—Mama Kim Eats.

The Southern-style restaurant based in North Sacramento will be one of 12 purveyors occupying a kitchen space inside The Bank’s ground-floor culinary concourse, which once served as the historic building’s lobby.

Mama Kim Eats' menu will feature its popular line-up of beautifully plated Southern- and seafood-inspired apps and entrées made with local ingredients, including fried chicken, shrimp and grits, and a cheese and charcuterie plate with roasted garlic olives and a fruit compote. For dessert, there will likely be butterscotch pudding with a whipped crème anglaise. Proprietor Kim Scott says she is experimenting with different methods of preparing spins on her classic fare to suit the food hall—perhaps, for instance, a chicken-and-waffle small plate that could be shared among friends.

The Mama Kim Eats space at The Bank will also feature a manned oyster and seafood station, where patrons can belly up to the bar and watch their selections be shucked and prepped.

“We’ve been talking about this for a year a now and it’s fun to be involved with something that’s new,” Scott says. “It will be a very different concept for Sacramento, and the space is going to be beautiful.”

The Bank is slated to open in late summer, likely in August. By the time it’s complete, the 30,000-square-foot hall with a spiral staircase and guilded ceilings will comprise three levels—the culinary concourse with both counter and table service, the mezzanine with sweeping downtown views, and a basement bank vault taproom pouring 70 brews, along with whiskey and scotch.

The Bank will be rolling out its list of purveyors in the coming months.

“The response has been overwhelming and we’ve had hundreds of applicants,” says The Bank spokesperson Patrick Harbison. “They’ll be very diverse, both well-known institutions and brand-new food vendors for which this will be their first brick-and-mortar.”
