Hold the Mayo
A local cake pop maker creates the ultimate fiesta on a stick for Cinco de Mayo

Cinco de Mayo just got a whole lot sweeter with a coterie of vibrant cake pops by South Sacramento-based Curtin’s Confections, which is offering a package of 12 in the shapes of mini margaritas, tacos, piñatas, maracas and other fiesta-friendly accoutrements for the May holiday. Customers can mix and match when ordering their custom dozen ($55) from Ashlie Curtin, who launched her eponymous online dessert business in 2016 and crafts her hand-held, hand-molded treats in flavors like French vanilla, chocolate fudge, Funfetti, red velvet and mint chip.
The baker uses a special recipe that results in a moist cookie-dough-like texture and sets her creations apart. But it’s her intricate, lifelike designs that really take the cake. “I like to go for that ‘wow’ or shock factor,” Curtin says. “I love to challenge myself and make one-of-a-kind, completely unique pieces of edible art.”
