Mikuni Kaizen
Essential Information
“Kaizen” means continuous improvement, and that’s the philosophy behind this outpost from Sacramento’s prolific Mikuni group in the Fountains at Roseville. This locale features longtime Mikuni favorites, but an extensive small plates menu differentiates this spot, including a lineup of Kurobuta pork dishes (don’t miss the rich tonkatsu) and other “Japanese tapas,” from the “illegal asparagus” (oil-blanched and dusted with yuzu salt, it comes with a fiery dipping sauce) to vegetarian and shrimp tempura. And the interior features a painting from local artist and America’s Got Talent 2012 finalist David Garibaldi, who has created a witty piece depicting Albert Einstein as a sushi chef. Garibaldi even gets a nod on the menu: look for the Triple P Garibaldi Roll with shrimp, asparagus and spicy tuna.
