Taste: The region's latest food, drink & restaurant news for Sept. 21

In this week's helping of local food news, a popular midtown gelateria expands to East Sacramento, a health-minded food truck takes to the streets and a well-loved Davis cafe renovates. Plus, a downtown music lounge adds a patio.
B-Side
The music-themed lounge on 14th and S Streets, which opened in late 2015 and proudly touts itself as a local dive bar, has submitted an application to the city proposing an expansion to include a patio and a second building for residential use adjacent to the bar. The 500-square-foot patio space along S Street will serve as an outdoor area for bar-goers to mingle and drink. The 1,400-square-foot building adjacent to the patio would serve as a private apartment, with a garage on the lower level. Owner Bret Bair estimates that if the plans are approved, the patio could be open by late next spring. 1430 S St. Sacramento. 706-1830. b-sidesacramento.com
Cafe Bernardo
Cafe Bernardo in Davis is getting a makeover and will reopen by the end of September. According to Stacy Paragary of the Paragary Restaurant Group, the outpost is due for a remodel, having occupied its current location on D Street for the past 20 years without any major updates. The café will sport new counters, modern wood shelves and tabletops, as well as hanging heated lamps in the outdoor seating space. The bar next door, originally known as Bar Bernardo, will be renamed the Wiki Bar after the Wiki Wacky Woo, a legendary local cocktail loaded with vodka, gin, rum, tequila, triple sec, Bacardi rum and pineapple and cranberry juices. Set to reopen the first week of October, the bar will sport a tiki theme, with Polynesian artwork and bamboo, and its drink menu will get an overhaul—including the addition of the famed Wiki Wacky Woo. 234 D St. 530-750-5101. cafebernardo.com

Stay Bowled
This new health-conscious food truck soft-opened on Sept. 3, offering açaí bowls with various toppings and flavors. The bowls start with a blended mixture of açaí berries and coconut water or almond milk, then are sprinkled with fruit, like locally sourced blueberries, strawberries and banana, or sweet, nutritious items like organic granola, almond or peanut butters and honey. Brothers Josh and Taylor de Luna, who launched the truck, say they sold out in just four hours at their inaugural event at the Caffeine and Kilos Invitational in Elk Grove. Their most popular menu item, “The Gains,” is made with a standard açaí blend topped with peanut butter and local bee pollen. The brothers are adding improvements to their truck and will hit the road again sometime this fall, with hopes to expand to a brick-and-mortar location in the future. instagram.com/staybowled
