What to do around Sacramento on Inauguration Day (and the day after)

From a patriotic viewing party to an angst-filled interactive art show and "nonpartisan Buddhist-inspired meditation," here are eight diverse events to mark the inauguration of President Trump on Jan. 20; whatever your political persuasion, there's something here to help you heal, deal or celebrate.
Inauguration Day Yoga
8 a.m. Say ommm at this hour-long morning class that Akasha Yoga in Davis has opened up specifically for the inauguration. The class will be offered on a donation basis, with all proceeds going toward Woodland-based Empower Yolo, an organization that provides emergency shelter and counseling for victims of domestic violence and assault. Space is limited, so yogis are encouraged to stake a mat space early. 8-9 a.m. Akasha Yoga. 140 F St. Davis. 530-302-5886. facebook.com/events
Inauguration Day Meditation and Prayer
9 a.m. If you’re in need of a moment of Zen on the morning of the election, find your way to the Sacramento Dharma Center, which is inviting guests to partake in a "nonpartisan, Buddhist-inspired meditation and prayer gathering" to cope with worldly changes and connect with fellow peacemakers. Three facilitators will lead guided meditations accompanied by soft music, and guests of all backgrounds and political beliefs are encouraged to join in, whether they have a couple minutes or a couple hours to spare. 9 a.m.-12 p.m. Sacramento Dharma Center. 3111 Wissemann Dr. 386-9844. sacdharma.org

“Not My President!” Inauguration Day Protest

Trump Inauguration Party
3 p.m. Those ready to “make America great again” can belly up to the bar at Louie’s Cocktail Lounge in Rancho Cordova to watch Inauguration Day unfold on flat-screens, socialize with other supporters and purchase Trump merchandise, like hats, buttons, bumper stickers and T-shirts. Supporters of Hillary, Bernie and third-party candidates are welcome, as are any who are still undecided, and everyone is encouraged to bring snacks and hors d’oeuvres to share. If you’re late to the political party, don’t miss the voter registration tables set up at the event. 3-8 p.m. Louie’s Cocktail Lounge. 3030 Mather Field Rd. Rancho Cordova. meetup.com
Trumpty Dumpty
6 p.m. If the election had you reeling to blow off some steam at the expense of Trump and his coming administration, this one-night, interactive art exhibit at Beatnik Studios will let you do just that. Sacramento-based sculptor Tyrone Billingsley has fashioned egg-shaped effigies of Donald Trump and encourages his audience to knock the pieces off of a brick wall throughout the evening. Sip complimentary beer and wine while Trumpty Dumpty has a great fall from his beautiful wall. Free. 6-8 p.m. Beatnik Studios. 723 S St. 400-4281. dymaxicon.com/trumptydumpty
Never Trump Inaugural Slam
8 p.m. Those bearing the weight of political frustration can spark their inner slam poet at this open mic night at Luna’s Cafe & Juice Bar in downtown Sacramento, hosted by Sac Unified Poetry Slam, who is inviting writers (novice slam poets are welcome, too) to prepare two poems that are three minutes long or less. Cafe owner Art Luna expects the evening’s poetry and performances to be “fun and critical” using fodder from the election and inauguration. Get ready for your mic drop. Free. 8-10:30 p.m. Luna's Cafe & Juice Bar. 1414 16th St. 441-3931. evensi.us
Women’s March on Sacramento
Jan. 21 “Because women’s rights are human rights” is the motto of this march at the State Capitol, set to coincide with the Women’s March on Washington and other nationwide rallies that same morning. Thousands of participants who aim to stand up for the rights of marginalized communities—from women and immigrants to the LGBTQIA community and assault survivors—are expected to convene at Southside Park to march 1.2 miles to the Capitol in an effort to send a bold message to America’s new administration on its first day in office. 10 a.m.-5 p.m. California State Capitol. 1315 10th St. womensmarchsac.com
