Sacramento Natural Foods Co-op
Fred, Produce Manager; Cristina, Store Manager; Brian, General Manager; Nova, Merchandising Director; Jolie, Marketing Manager
As a community-owned natural foods grocery store founded on cooperative values, it was difficult to decide on just one person to represent us as our expert for this issue. We decided on a handful of our managers who all uphold the legacy of supporting wellness in our community for over 50 years with our unique selection of local, organic and sustainable products.
Since Sacramento was named the Farm-to-Fork capital, more focus has been put on shopping locally. Why is that important?
We think it’s important because it is a sustainable choice that directly benefits our community. When we buy from a local farmer or business, not only are products fresher, but also the carbon footprint associated with transportation is reduced. Spending locally also has a significant economic impact: for every dollar spent on a local product, 70 cents stays in our community! Supporting local producers has always been a cornerstone of our business practices because these relationships create long-term mutual benefits.
What sets you apart from other grocery stores?
What truly sets us apart is our commitment to quality standards and our extensive selection of local products. As a natural foods grocery store, we do not carry items that include hydrogenated oils or artificial flavorings, colorings or sweeteners. Our produce department is 100% organic, our meat department prioritizes regenerative farming practices, and all meat is raised without antibiotics or hormones. Additionally, our seafood department is dedicated to sustainability, offering environmentally responsible options for our customers.
What are some common misconceptions about the Co-op?
One common misconception is that you must be a member to shop at the Co-op. While membership offers great perks, everyone is welcome to shop. Another is the perception that our prices are high. This stems from our curated selection of high-quality specialty items that can cost more to produce. We also offer a wide range of everyday pantry staples that are often competitively priced, making us accessible to all kinds of shoppers.
