Eight haunted attractions scare up some fun this Halloween season

Run for your life from zombies, ghouls and evil circus clowns at Citrus Heights' nightmarish Cemetarium Haunted House.

Monsters and goblins and brains, oh my! We scared up eight hair-raising haunted attractions that are sure to make the month of October a spook-tacular one.

Callson Manor
Watch a serial killer take on the electric chair, navigate an insane asylum and escape supernatural demons trying to take over your body this season at the Roseville-based terror fest. Hosting seven haunted houses spanning 2.5 acres of the Placer County Fairgrounds, the Callson Manor aims to make visitors feel like they are entering a horror film. This year, it has also added the free GETBIT Vision Augmented Reality app for an even more interactive experience. $29-$60. Cemetarium Haunted House
From a family-friendly low-scare option to a full freak-out version, Cemetarium caters to the horror lover in us all. Make the acquaintance of sinister clowns and other creepy characters at the Psycho Circus or face your worst fears at the Cemetraium house as ghosts and zombies lurk in nooks and crannies. The 20,000-square-foot spook fest, which is redesigned each year, prides itself on filling up their entire facility with scares, so expect something frightful waiting to get you around every corner. $6-$30. Corbett’s Grindhouse of Horror
The House of Horrors, Zombieland and Carn-evil are all back at this bloodcurdling bonanza, but with new twists and a new outdoor location in Folsom. Use laser guns to shoot hoards of the undead and attempt to survive the apocalypse in Zombieland, visit the House of Horrors and its wicked cohabitants that include characters from classic films like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and meet some not-so-funny clowns and circus freaks at the Carn-Evil. The spooky sets were designed by Corbett Custom Construction, which owned by Jim Corbett, a Roseville local who has been featured on HGTV and the DIY Network. $20 ($15 for ages 12 and under). Fright Planet
The annual Fright Planet attraction boast nine eerie experiences, including both haunted houses and thrilling rides, such as Apparatus, an intense spinning ride, and Buried Alive, which simulates being buried in a casket prematurely, and The Little House of Carnage, a closed-down diner turned torture chamber. $19.95-$49.95. Haunted Fort 
Sutter’s Fort’s lantern-lit tours will lead attendees around the historic landmark telling yarns of disaster and murder that took place in California, like the story of Mary Graves, a Donner Party survivor who had two husbands killed. Though Sutter’s Fort is typically a popular family destination, this tour is not recommended for children under the age of 8. $8 ($6 for ages 17 and under). Open Oct. 23-24. Times vary by date. Haunted Hills Asylum
El Dorado Hills is alive with the sound of screams as Scare4Hope puts on its yearly fundraiser benefiting its youth development and outreach program as well as local schools. Recommended for haunt-heads, this year, a 2,200-square-foot asylum has been set up at the El Dorado Hills Town Center, where the dangerous and insane patients and doctors are ready to give everyone a dose of fear as they make their way through the creepy psychiatric hospital. For the faint of heart, a fairy can serve as a guide throughout the excursion. $6 ($5 with the donation of a can of nonperishable food). Open Fri.-Sun. through Oct. 31. Heartstoppers
Stop by Heartstoppers this month to get your blood pumping with four hair-raising houses. Protect your soul at Tomb of Shadows or check into the Steamghast Asylum, or visit the Deadlands, a town populated by zombies looking for their killer Cyrus Lynch, or help find Alice, a young women whose family home was turned into an insane asylum at the Malice in Underland haunted house, a frightful twist on the Lewis Carroll classic. $20-$30 ($15 for ages 12 and under). Slipknot’s Scream Park California
Inspired and produced by the heavy metal band Slipknot and its gruesome, graphic style, this fear-inducing terror park was voted the scariest haunted house event in the West by Forbes magazine. Scary prospects include Prepare for Hell, which drops you into the underworld, the labyrinthian Clown’s Playhouse, and Skin Ticket, where you can use a single flashlight to try and flee a serial killer’s house. $25-$40.
