The Jungle Bird
Essential Information
If you need an island vacation, midtown’s Jungle Bird offers the draws of a tropical destination without the plane ride. Inspired by old-school tiki bars like Trader Vic’s, this cozy Polynesian paradise features bamboo walls, a thatched-roof bar and a custom-carved 8-foot-tall totem pole, as well as an extensive cocktail list with classic rum-based drinks like the 1944 Mai Tai and original concoctions like the fruity and sweet Patty’s Poison made with rum, pineapple juice, strawberry purée and cinnamon. (Tip: Bring a group to try the Three Hour Tour, a tropical punch for six that’s served in a copper flamingo bowl.) The restaurant’s menu of Asian- and island-inspired eats expertly complements the drinks: The pu pu platter (which includes succulent kalua pork sliders with pineapple preserves) and entrées like the tombo poke will have you forgetting your mainland worries.
